Lytteuoal wharf laborers unanimously decided to agree to the proposed rates of pay wggested by the recent conference, but turned down a proposal in work aft»« 10 p.m. ' ; Dunedin, Yesterday. The Waterside /Workers' Union r* solved to reject the agreement on »*• count of the clause suggesting work after 10 p.m. UNPATRIOTIC COUNCILS. Wellington, Yesterday. The Recruiting Board has forwarded to the Masterton and Waipa County Councils an answer to their resolutions saying it was impossible for any Of their members to assist in the recruiting movement. The letter expreuw concern at the apparent inability of some public boards to realise the gravity of the present position, and emphasises in the strongest possible W»y the opinion that no suggestion of compulsion should be considered until the voluntary system baa been thoroughly tested and proved inadequate. Tfce board would like to know how the voluntary system can possibly be enecessful if other public bodies and other public men followed a lead so inimical to success as that set by the Masterton and Waipa County Councils.
