STRATFORD.
THE HOSPITAL BOARD. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Stratford, Last Night, The monthly meeting of the Stratford Hospital Board was held to-day. Present: J. McAllister (chairman). Sole, Smith, and Walters. SANITATION OF THE BOROUGH. The Department of Public Health, Welfinglton, wrote informing the Board that Inspector Middleton had been instructed to visit Stratford and look into the matter.of the sanitary condition of Stratford borough. A house to house inspection of the Borough is out of the question. This would take practically three months, and if it were carried out the local authorities in other boroughs would be asking for similar inspections, which would be' impossible 011 account of 'the small inspectorial staff of the Department. Each borough is responsible for its sanitary conditions and should be competent to supervise same. The Department is always willing to advise in special eases, and will give the borough every help in its power. lie had written them to 'this effect, urging them to take a wider view of their responsibilities under the Public Health Act, and Municipal Corporations Act, and to proceed themselves with an examination of the borough and rigid enforcement of their bye-lavs and the sanitary provisions of the Public Health Act and Municipal Corporations Act, Cr. Walters: The Heklth Department evidently think the borough is in a bad way.
Mr Sole said the Borough Council ought to be congratulated on deciding to make an inspection 0/ the business area of the town, and he hoped the aphalting of the footpaths would soon bo completed so that the borough engineer could undertake the work. Seeing thalfc the Council were going to do the work, after the asphalting of the footpaths had been completed, it was plain that the Borough Council did not realise what their responsibilities were.
WORK AT THE HOSPITAL. Dr. Steven (Medical Superintendent), reported that 24 patients had been admitted, 16 discharged, 1 died, and 15 remained. Ten operations under anaesthetics had been performed. One patient had been admitted to the isolation ward. GENERAL. The Medical's Superintendent's recommendation that Miss Cramer be .taken on the permanent staff was adopted. Mr. A. Gray, health inspector, reported that one ease of diphtheria was removed to the hospital and the premises disinfected.
