AUCKLAND REGATTA By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Jan. 23. The Auckland regatta opened under unfavorable conditions, with strong winds, a high sea, and rain. When manoeuvring for the start of the mulletboat race, the yachts Venus and Mowai collided, and the latter sunk. Several of her crew scrambled aboard the Venus, and others jumped into the water and I swam to the same craft. THE "PROPHET" RUA. Auckland, Jan. 29. The Maori prophet Sua, who at various times caused disturbances in the Unsworn. Country, was sentenced at Whakatane to a fine and nine months' imprisonment on charges of supplying liquor to Natives. Rua did not appear to answer the charge, and instructions were issued for his arrest. It was stated that Rua had assumed the title of -Kaiser, and had promised the Natives a great time when .the country was in the hands of the Germans, with the result that it had been practically impossible to get Maoris within his influence to enlist, FIRE AND ATTEMPTED SUICIDE. Woodville, Jan. 2!). A cottage on the Napier Road was burnt to the ground last night, and the contents, including some money, were wholly lost. The house was occupied by Mr. W. Stevens, an old man of (12. with no family. During the fire lie attempted to commit suicide with a blunt knife, on the excuse that he hart nothing to live for. He appeared in court this morning, and was remanded to appear at Napier next Saturday.
