FROM THE HIGH COMMISSIONER. LIVELY WORK IX THE WEST. Wellington, Last .Night. The High Commissioner reports:— London, Jan. 25, 5.5 p.m. ■New details confirm the report that the enemy attack which was attempted at the month of the Yser was dispersed by the Allies' artillery. The Germans were unable to debouch except at one point, where some groups penetrated the Allies' trenches. being chased out immediately after very lively grenade lighting, pausing sensible losses to the enemy. In Artois an action was conducted yesterday against the Allies' position, east of Xeuville St. Yaast, which completely failed. It was resumed at the end of the day on a greater scale, after a fresh series of mine explosions which were accompanied hy a very violent bombardment. The Germans attacked on a front of about fifteen hundred metres in the angle formed by the road from Arras to Lens, and the road from Xeuville St. Yaast to Thelus. Tim enemy succeeded at two points wnere the French firing trench was overthrown by explosions, the enemy occupying the craters, most of which'were retaken almost immediately. In the Vosges the. French effectively bombarded enemy works at Bandesapt. London, .fan. 2(1, 2.40 a.m. There is a violent bombardment on the enemy works by the British artillery in Belgium. In Artois there is a lively cannonade east of Xeuville and Dewailly, and north of the Aisne. An important convoy was dispersed in the region of Craonne. An enemy heavy batterv that was attempting to bombard the bridge at Bowyaubuc was damaged by our heavy pieces.
GERMAN'S CLAIM SUCCESSES. Received Jan. 20, 0.50 p.m. Amsterdam, Jan. 25. A Gorman communique states: Our artillery strongly shelled the enemy positions in Flanders and shuttered their; trenches, causing heavy losses. We dc-.' stroyed the Dempler tower of Nicuporfc Cathedral, which afforded the enemy a. good observation post. East of Nouville, after successful mine, explosions we attacked the French ad- j vaneed trenches, and captured three machine-guns and one hundred prisoners. AN AUSTRIAN SUCCESS. • Received Jan. 2", 1.30 a.m. Rome. Jan. 2G. The Austrians have occupied San Giovanni Meoua. BOMBASTIC TURKISH REPORT THE BATTLE OK THE TIGRIS. Received Jan. 20, (1.50 p.u Amsterdam, Jan. 25. A Turkish communique says: The British attacked us thirty-five miles east of Kut-cl-Amai'A, on both sides of tlio Tigris. The battle lasted six hours, and in counter-attacks we drove back the enemy for some kilometres. "We counted three thousand English dead on the battlefield, while our losses were comparatively small. We granted General Aylner's request for an armistice for a day. Prisoners stnie that in the previous battles at Sheikshaad the British lost .1000 dead and wounded. We attacked another British column at Korna, compelling them to retreat, leaving one hundred dead.
