MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
AWAKINO LICENSING CASE. "A PACK OP LIES." A sitting of the Magistrate's Court was held yesterday, Mr. A. Crooke, S.M, presiding. The case in which Joseph P. Brough was charged with (1) unlawfully keeping for sale a case of liquor, and (2) with selling a case of liquor in the Awakino and Mokau district, which is a nolicense area, was continued. The case for the police, which was heard last week, was to the effect that on November 18 defendant received a case of whisky, part of the contents of which were taken by two other men, who, according to the police, denied that they had an interest, in the case of whisky. Sub-Inspector Fouhy prosecuted, arid Mr. A. H. Johnstone appeared for defendant. In continuation of his case for the defence Mr. Johnstone called
Win. John Avery, a storekeeper at Awakino, who said that Constable McGregor asked him it he had an interest in Brough's case of whisky, and he said "No." He knew that Lake had had some of the whisky, but witness did not get any of the liquor. George Herbert Lake, a farmer, of Awakino, said he took four bottles of Brough's whisky, which he '-borrowed," as was the custom, but paid nothing for it.
John Harrison, a farmer at Awakino, said that he wanted some whisky, and as his own order did not arrive, lie got four bottles from Brough. It was the usual thin;, in Awakino to borrow whisky. Witness had never bought a bottle of whisky from anyone since lie had been in Awakino. "I intend to reserve my decision in this case," remarked the Magistrate. "The defendant has told a pack of lips, and the evidence has been absolutely contradictory." MILK VENDOR PROSECUTED. Harry Crozier, a milk vendor, was charged with selling milk which did not contain the required roportion of butter-fat. Mr. A. A. Bennett appeared for defendant, who pleaded not guilty. Sub-Inspector Fouhy prosecuted. The case was partly heard last week, and after further evidence was given the Magistrate convicted defendant and indicted a fine of £1 and costs. TERMINUS HOTEL RAID. A sequel to the recent raid on the Terminus Hotel was a charge against William 11. Peilew on being found in the hotel about 10.30 p.m. on December 9. Mr. A. H. Johnstone represented the defendant, and entered a plea of not guilty. A fine of 10s and costs 7s was imposed. THE DOG TAX. Inspector Tippins prosecuted William White for owning a dog which was not registered. A fine of 5s and costs 7s was inflicted.
