SOUTH TARANAKI NEWS.

(From Our Own Correspondent). The latest from here is the employment of Maori lassies in cheese-making. Two are employed at the Auroa branch of the Kaupokoivui factory and are giving entire satisfaction. The late Mr. Joll was the first to have Maori suppliers in these parts, and now the Kaupokonui Company have gone one better by having the Maori ladies manufacturing their milk into cheese. : The Riverdale Co-op. Co., which leads the way in South Taranaki in paying the first bonus, is paying out tlireeMuce per lb butter-fat' from August 1 To the end of January, making Is 3d for these months. It is 'expected that -full? Is 7d to Is Sd will be paid for butterfat this season by cheese factories. Several would-be nominators report, that they are unable to exhibit at the forthcoming Taranaki Agricultural Society's Show on account of scarcity of hands. All their time is taken up with their farm work, and they cannot leave their homes. Four large houses have been erected at the Kapuni railway junction, on .the Manaia road, and two more are going up. These dwellings cost about £SOO each, and are built in wood, although material for concrete is handy. The tarred roads are very pleasant to travel on, but want at least a fresh coating every twelve to fifteen months. as the traffic is very heavy in these parts. A sign of the times is the roll of honor posted up in the porch of the Catholic Church at Manaia. So far twenty-nine names appear, which is very good for the parish. The publication of names in this manner is-' bound ti stimulate recruiting amongst the denomination. The rain we have had has done thousands of pounds' wortn of good to turnip growers and milk producers. Overheard lately: Stockman to friend: '-'By Jove! I hope the war will last a bit longer." "Why?" asked his friend. "Well, I've just 'bought a line of bullocks, and next season if the war is on I'll make a pot!" Sie est vita!
