NOTES FROM THE TIMES. Times and Sydney Sun Services. Received dan. 2-t, 5.5 p.m. London. Jan. 23. The Times, in a financial and trade review, says that there is no more significant thing in connection with the financing of our adverse balance of trade than the Canadian Government's arrangement to credit the Imperial Exchequer with part of the first internal Canadian loan. Canada's example shows the self-governing Dominions the possibilities of finance if war conditions are prolonged. Perhaps it is the beginning of a new era in Imperial financial arrangements. GERMAN TAXATION" HURTING. Amsterdam reports that the new taxes are being bitterly discussed by German Socialists, who demand the seizure of war profits. The Liberals complain of the folly of loading people with new burdens while national unity is endangered. The Cologne Yolks Zeitnng says that a few hundred million marks does not matter, as the people will accept any amount of taxation. SWEDISH WOOD PULP. Copenhagen, Jan. 23. The Swedish Ministry is calming the anxiety of pulp manufacturers bypromising as many export licenses as possible. .-. »i, SWEDEN MAKING GOOD. Copenhagen, Jan. 23. A Swedish Blue Book shows that the Scandinavian Convoy Conference in February failed owing to Britain's objection to convoys in British territorial waters. Sweden, however, issued Convoy Regulations which will be enforced in the Baltic, probably in the autumn. Sweden's economic situation is described as good. The Savings Bank deposits for 1915 were 29 million kroner, above 1914.
