Mr. E. Griffiths, the newly-elected member of the New Plymouth Borough Council, was welcomed to the Council table last night. v
Commander Evans, of Captain Scott's Antarctic expedition, has been married in London to Miss Elsa Andvord, who has been known as the ''Belle of Christianin."
Out of twenty-five applicants for the position of headmaster oE the school at Apia, Samoa, Mr. E. J. Xewland, at present headmaster at Kurow, has been offered the position. Mr. 11. F. Law, manager of the Bank of Australasia at Waverley, and late of Xew Plymouth, has been transferred to the Auckland district, and will leave tor the north in a few days.
Mr. W. Hutchens, of Hawera, who recently sat for his Intermediate Musical Bachelor Examination, passed in three subjects—English, French, and History of music.
Captain F, Beamish, of the Head Offic* of the Postal Department, and sou of Mr. and Mrs. .1. (~'. Beamish, of Pntea, has volunteered and been accepted for service at tho front. Captain Beamish served with the tith. Contingent during tho Boer War.
The election of a member of the Taranaki Education Board for the South Ward, to take the. place of Mr. A. Mel. Bradbury who recently resigned, resigned, resulted as follows:—Mr. .lames Youn", Oaonui (a former member of the, Board), (10 votes; Mr. S. 0. Smith, New Plymouth, 57 votes. Four votes arrived too late to be recorded.
I The death lias just occurred at Dundec of ~Mr«. Alexander Koss, who was the sole survivor of the women whn went to the Crimea with the 93rd Highlanders. Her Jmsband was a sergeant in that regiment. She possessed a remarkable memory, and could give a vivid description of h'er experiences. She kept tlie hut in which Sir Colin Camphell resided. From a distance she witnessed the storming of the heights of Alma on September -JO, tS."»4, and was present at Balaclava with two other women belonging to the regiment. They were a little behind he spot occupied by Sir Colin Campbell and his stall', and in front of them was the famous "thin red line." She could recall the pleasure with which the soldiers regarded the coming of .Miss Florence Nightingale a «d her nurses.
