WAR NOTES.
"KRUPPS WILL GO DOWW! Lord Murray, of Elibank, Director of Recruiting for Munition YVork:-r "Over a million men and woman ftre working on gunß, shells, and other'munitions of land war, in addition to work for the navy. They are turning out the host work in the world. Till a year ago the chief source of Britain's power wa» naval. But we determined, when war broke out. temporarily to convert ourselves into a military Power on a ecale worthy of our great Allies, whose efforts and sacrifices are the admiration of every Briton. We are working day and night. We pledge the whole of our rosourc.es to tho common cause. Tho engineering resources nf Britain have been harnessed in a remarkable manner for the production "of munitions of war. It has all been & wonderful experiment. It rauvt not be forgotten that the workers have agreed to a relaxation of trade union rules and regulations gained after 100 ycaj'i of struggle. They have done so with the full knowledge and trust that when, to uso the words of M. Briand, we have marched through victory to peace, the British nation will play them true and re-establish them in the rights they have se legitimately and laboriously secured and patriotically relinquished. It i» wonderful to see the spirit of conciliation rife in the land. There is no question of coercing labour. The working classes fully appreciate the gravity* o! the situation. They have confidence and pride jn, (their own prowess in the workshop, and they are putting forth superhuman efforts by strenuous and selfi disciplined labour to bring about speedy and decisive results. Tho glory of Krupps and its forty years' organisation will go down before the efforts of thU so-called''amateur' and 'unbusinesslike' nation. 1 believe labourer, employer, »nd Government working together u> bar. mony, will astonish the world—oven the German world, that lives in the 'belief that its 'machinery' will always be omnipotent—and produce a victorious trad lasting peace." |
