PATRIOTIC WORK.
ROTORUA CONVALESCENT HOME. •' .QUESTION OF ASSISTANCE. The Patriotic Committee met last night. Present: Messrs J. E. Wilson (chairman), C. Carter, J. Paton, W. A. Collis, W. J. Chaney, W. C. Weston, A. B. Gibson, C. E. Bellringer, D. J.. Hughes, 0. N. Firth, Captain Allen, and the Rev. A. H. Colvile. When [the committee was recently asked to contribute to tho Rotorua convalescent home for invalided soldiers, the Minister in Charge of Hospitals was asked for information as to who had contributed, and in reply the following letter was received: "The Itotal cost of tho hospital will be about £IO,OOO and I have pleasure in giving hereunder a list of the principal donations received to date: Mrs. T. H. Lowry (Hastings) £,IOOO, Poor of Great Britain and Allies Relief Fund £IOOO, Mr. Hope Gibbons (Wangairai) £SOO, Salvation Army £SOO, South Canterbury Patriotic War Relief Association £SOO, South Canterbury Patriotic Committee .£250, Gisborne Citizen's Defence Committee £250, and tho Bible in State Schoojs League of New Zealand £195 4s 2d." The chairman reported that at the meeting of tho Taranaki War Relief Association the opinion was expressed that the equipment of the convalescent home was a matter for the Government, and a resolution was passed stating that Taranaki could not contribute to the home. It was decided to inform the Minister that the committee could not see its way to make a donation.
DENTAL TREATMENT FOR RECRUITS. ' " Major J. McN.iught, commander of the Taranaki military district, wrote in reference to the dental examination of recruits. He stated that dental officers had been appointed in every town in Taranaki, and their duties would be to examine and to chart the mouth of each recruit, and decide whether he was dentally fit or not. If not, the officer shall allocate the recruit with his chart direct to a member of tho Dental Association, who will then decide and carry out what treatment is necessary. If the recruit cannot pay for treatment, the Defence Department will pay at the following rates: Extractions with local anaesthetics Is, plaster fillings 2s 3d, anaesthetics (is, full upper and lower dentures each £2 2s, partial dentures 7s 6'd for the first tooth, and 2s 6d for each additional tooth, maximum charge in any case, £5 ss. The letter set out other details of the scheme, which have already been published. Up to the present, tho following dental recruiting officers have been appointed: Messrs 0. Gray (New Plymouth), W. R. Johns (Waitara), C. R. O'Carroll (Inglewood), J. S. Lyons (Stratford), J. Gray (Hawera),'E. G. Barley (Hawera), E. C. Gilbert (Patea), H. H. Curtis (Waverley), and Sir C. Burdett (Eltham).
NATIONAL SERVICE. Mr. F. Norris, organiser of the National Service League, wrote asking for a room to be arranged for holding public meetings in New Plymouth. Mr. Norris said he was touring the Dominion and would"reach New Plymouth on Tuesday, January 25. It was proposed to hold a meeting for boy scouts at 3 p.m. and a public meeting at 8 p.m. It was stated arrangements had been made to hold the meetings in the Town Hall.
