PENSIONS TO MINERS. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Jan. 17. Up to December 31, 90 claims had been received under the Miners' Phthisis Act, 11115, of which 82 were granted pensions, representing an annual liability of £38159, made up of 51 pensions at" £52, 28 at £3ll, one at £SO, and two at £32 10s '(widows). Four cle-v"" "■ journed or reject hand. CHARGE OF BETTING DISMISSED. Auckland, Jan. IS. In the Police Court, James Arthur Frost was charged that, being a bookmaker, he made a bet on the licensed premises known as the Working Men's Club and Mechanics' Institute. Accused was barman at the club, and evidence was given that, on December 3, he produced a double chart and made bets. The Magistrate held that a chartered club was not licensed premises for the purposes of the Gaming Act, though so far as concerned the sale of liquor it was licensed premises. The charge was dismissed.
