THE CARNIVAL.
PROBABLE DATES ARRANGED. FORMATION OF ARMIES THIS. WEEK. CARNIVAL WEEK IN MARCH. The machinery for organising tlie Taranaki Carnival in aid of the wounded soldiers so that the scheme will operate over the whole of the province from New Plymouth to Pa tea is now prepared, and it is hoped to set the initial plans in motion this week. The project has been taken up with enthusiasm throughout North Taranaki, and has been welcomed in the AA'aimato and Pa tea districts, leaving only the Hawera district yet to give an indication of its intentions. Mr. J. Clarke, who is acting as secretary, stated on Saturday morning that the proposed arrangement's for the Carnival have been tentatively fixed as follows: This week—Fixing of districts for the armies to participate in the Battle of the Bullion and the organisation of armies to be taken in hand. January 24 to 31.—A week for a great recruiting campaign throughout Taranaki to enable each army area to build up its army, February—The Battle of the Bullion will be carried on in earnest, and for about three weeks the "firing" will take place. March I.—Opening of the Carnival, when the Fete of Nations ami Paddy's Market will run for nine nights at New Plymouth, and then various attractions will be arranged throughout Taranaki by the organisers of the different armies. March !).—The finale of the Carnival, when the trams will bo opened at New Plymouth, and the occasion will be marked by a great fete, in which thousands from all over the province will be induced to participate. POSITION OF SPORTS GROUND COMMITTEE.
A misapprehension exists in regard to the part which the Sports Ground Committee are going to play in the Carnival, it having been stated that "the Committee were running and organising (ho Carnival and were to receive 10 per cent, of the net proceeds, with a maximum of £SOO, for running the Carnival." This is not so. Every penny which the Carnival brings in will be for the benefit of soldiers and their dependants, less the expenses of running the Carnival, which it is mjpected will not exceed 1J per cent, of the profits. Mr. Clarke said that the origin of the Carnival lay in a move by the sports Ground Committee to arrange a function in aid of funds for controlling the Sports Ground, and from that developed the idea of having a New Plymouth Carnival in aid of the wounded soldiers, the Sports Ground to receive a percentage of the takings, as the Carnival would be managed by the Sports Ground Committee. Since then the scheme has developed into provincial one, and consequently not a single penny will he deducted for the Sports Ground. The Sports Ground Committee have taken in hand the preliminary organisation of ,the Carnival and they will carry on until the permanent committees are constituted, but it should be clearly understood throughout Taranaki that ,the whole proceeds are for patriotic purposes.
