A tragedy lias occurred at Ultimo, where Edward John Hayes smashed Ins wife's head with an axe. Her* condition is serious. Hayes then fatally cut his own throat. The couple ha* frequent quarrels, and after a row on Tuesday Hayes left. Ho returned to Ins home early tliis morning, smashed a window with an axe, and entered the room whre his wife was sleeping with ,six of the eight children. One of the children tinavailingly tried to ward off the blow at her mother. A note found in Hayes* pocket referred to family troubles, audio bis inteition. to. kill his wife. ~„., ... t: .
