DISTRICT NEWS.

OPUNAKE. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The monthly meeting of the Town Board was held on Monday evening,' Messrs Million, Ross and Sorrensen being present. The chairm'an, Mr. W. C. Dudley was absent in Hawera, being still under the doctor's care. An application from tho Seaside Society for a permit ,to raise funds for the wounded soldiers in connection with the. Seaside Society's carnival fete was granted. The foreman reported that Coleman Bros, (of New Plymouth), had made an excellent job of the outlet for Hie septic tank connected with the Opunake Hotel, and that it met with his approval. He also reported that during the month he had been engaged in tarring, kerbing, and cleaning footpaths, and he suggested that the acetylene generator should be overhauled. This the Board authorised to be done. He reported that paper rubbish in quantities had colloebd under Messrs Carries and Hickey's shop, and was a danger. Messrs Thorpe and Callaghan had removed straw* packing rubbish from about their premises, but the former had not done so. The clerk had written to the firms concerned asking them to have tho rubbish removed so as to minimise danger from fire. The Board having no by-laws cannot enforce their request, but the insurance companies may assert their authority. The news of Mr. Rawclifl'e's death came as a surprise. He caught a cold a few months ago, and being a robust man, took no notice of it. But it developed into consumption. The Egmont councillors forwarded a wreath and condolences to the bereaved family. The Seaside Committee are busy preparing for the annual fete; 50 per cent, of the proceeds wil 1 be devoted to patriotic funds. A large number of country people during the past fortnight have spent a few days at the seaside, and a number of tents are pitched at the Opunake bay. Mr. Cooncliffe, of Elthani Road, was operated on last Sunday, at the Hawera hospital, for appendicitis.
