WAITARA.

NORTE TARAXATCI PATRIOTIC LEAGUE. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The above League resumed its weekly meetings in the Borough Council Chambers last Monday evening-, his Worship the. Mayor occupying tlio chair, The following were the members present: Messrs Kwens, Rennic, Buchanan, Marlow, Johns, Xosworthy, Fra'ser, Rev. Harrison, Hellier, Graham, Opensluuv. and the assistant secretary. A wire was received from Mr. Butt, Uruti, apologising for his and Mr. Barnitt's inability to attend the meeting. The chairman welcomed Messrs Hellier and Openshaw as delegates from the Lcp-pi'rton-Se:>try Hill branch. The Defence Office, Hawera, circularised the League with a scheme for the dental examination of recruits. The "Proposed National Service League" wrote asking the support of the League in making a national effort to help the good work of Patriotic Societies, the Discharged Soldiers' Department and the Soldiers' Clubs. It was resolved to await further particulars before taking any action in the matter. A letter was received from the Prime Minister explaining the reason of A. J. W. Lawrence's rejection. It stated that Mr. Lawrence was selected ten days prior to the departure of the quota for the reinforcement camp, and when checking the attestation papers it was discovered that he was unfit for active service on account of defective vision. The Group Commander had no other course but that of advising Mr. Lawrence by telegram that lie could not be permitted to attend camp. A wire w:i3 received from the Minister in Charge of Hospitals asking the League to contribute towards the equipment of a convalescent camp at Rotorua. In reply he is to be informed that the League has no funds to be devoted to this purpose. Mr. Tweedie, Awakino, wrote asking for particulars of the working of the League.

The matter of thp collection of sandbags was brought up by Mr. Hellier. and it was decided to ask tlie sub-branches to collect suitabh baps and forward same to 'the Wool Store at Waitara. Mr. Graham stated that the Wailri branch intends holding a Gala Day early in March and asked for suggestions regarding same. It was decided that the committee appointed to report on 'the Carnival meet shortly to further discuss the matter. Mr. Ewens gave notice of motion as follows: "That any member of this committee failing to attend three successive meetings shall cease to be a member''
