STRATFORD.
- (From Our Own Correspondent.)' Stratford, Yesterday. Lieut. Davey, has been appointed delegate to represent the local brigade at the United Fire Brigades' Conference, to be held at Westport in February.
Foreman E. A. Drako has been elected secretary of the Fire Brigade, vice Foreman Bradley resigned. The Borough labor staff are busy at work digging up the footpaths in Broadway, in order to bring them up to the permanent levels. To-day a would-be recruit called on "your own." and complained that he and four others had enlisted at the same time over two months ago, and the Defence Department promised that they should go after Christmas. Only one so far has been taken, and seeing that recently the Department were calling out for 300 recruits to go into camp at once he naturally wants to know why he and his mates' applications were not considered. One of his mates is so disgusted at the treatment received that lie has paid his railway fare to Wellington in the hope that the authorities will take him into camp at once. It does seem a pity that the Department should so treat men who are anxious to serve their cihmtry.
