DISTRICT NEWS.

EGMONT VILLAGE. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The farmers in this locality are just sow working at fairly high pressure, what - with ploughing and getting the ground ready for swedes, drilling in the turnips, and the cutting and saving of hay. The work leaves the farmers very little time for pleasure during the festive seasiVu. Notwithstanding these facts the farming community were well represented at the East End seaside picnic on New Year's day, "Out for pleasure," as they say, giving the children a chance to have a dip in the briny, and I hope those parents who made this special cfl'ort were satisfied. To see the gay throng of young and old, some floundering in the. sea, and others catching crabs, was really worth travelling many .miles to see. The committee of management are entitled to our warmest thanks for providing such a splendid programme, and carrying it through in the manner in which they did. Our local schoolmaster, Mr. Auld, witli Mrs. Auld, has gone to Wellington for the 'Xnus vacation. Miss Mary Jjtarsll and Miss Norah MttJaTi foftve gone to Repongft for .the holidays. The weather during the last few days has been anything but favorable for hay-making, heavy south-westerly winds, with slight showers occasionally, making it almost impossible to savo it, more especially for ithose who intend to stack it in the field.
