BRITISH TRADE. London, Jan. S. I iSir L. ft. Chiozza Money, in the Daily Mail, says the exports of British produce for the past year totalled £385,000,000, as compared'with £525,000,000 in the boom year 1913. He adds that in 1914 the exports, despite, the loss of £54,000,000 of normal exports to the enemy, were greater than in 1009. In the fifth, month of :tho war the exports were £20,000,000, and in the seventeenth month £34,000,000. Prices certainly had risen, but the increased export values were balanced by increased import values. It was remarkable to note that the personnel of the Army and Navy I'ose from one and a half millions in December, 1914, ito three millions in December, 1915; yet despite the withdrawal of one and a half million ablebodied men from trade and industry the exports had risen 30 per cent. The explanation would probably be found to be that in peace time many able-bodied men were engaged in unproductive work.
