AWAKINO FATALITY.

HOW ME. LEECH WAS KILLED. RUN OVER BY HIS DRAY. " A report of the inquest concerning the death of Mr. Charles Leech, of Awakino, who was killed last Friday, was received by the Xew Plymouth police last night. The inquest was presided over by Mr. Hugh Praser, J.P., acting-coroner. Constable T. J. McGregor, of Mokau, said that when he was returning from Mohacnui on Friday night he was informed by Mr. David Twcodie, of Awakino, that Mr. Charles Leech had been killed through being run over by his dray, near Ballueraggan farm, Manganui Road. Witness proceeded to investigate, and he found the dray capsized on the road, and about a quarter oi a mile further along the road he found the deceased, who was dead. There wag a break in one of the wheel marks close to where deceased was lying, which showed clearly that the wheel had passed over deceased. The deceased had evidently been sitting on the top of the load, when the wheels dropped into a bole, and he had either been thrown off or jumped off, fearing he was going to l)e capsized over the bank into the river, and in doing so fell and the wheel went over him.

Cecil Carrington, a farm laborer employed at Ballaeraggan farm, deposed that he found the deceased at 0 p.m. Ho was lying in the centre of the road and was quite, dead. William Perkins, of Ballaeraggan farm, stated that the deceased called at his house on Friday and had lunch with him. The deceased left at 2.55 p.m. to continue his journey to Awakino, with his three-horse team and dray loaded with timber. Witness say no" more oi deceased until he saw him'lying dead on the road about half a mile from his house. Witness asked deceased before he left how his team was going, and deceased said his team was going very nicely. A verdict was returned that deceased was accidentally Med through, being run over by the Ufay which' he was driving. ' The funeral of the late Mr,. Leech took place at Inglewood yesterday afternoon, and was attended by a large number of people from all parts of the district,
