FOR THE FRONT.
DEPARTURE OF THE TWELFTHS. LARGE BODY OF MEN. Taranaki's quota for the Twelfth Reinforcements left bj» the mail train yesterday morning, the men facing accorded enthusiastic send-offs at the respective stations at which they boarded the train. At New Plymouth the men assembled at the Old Drill Hall at 8.30, and, headed by the Citizens' Band and accompanied by members of the Defence Rifle Club, marched to the railway station, where p, large crowd had assembled, incluilinr; members of the Patriotic Commits . Mr- IT. Okey, MjPi, addressed the men, and at the outset apologised for the absence of his Worship the Mayor (Mr. G. .H. Burgess). Continuing, Mr. Okey said Taranaki had every reason to feel proud ox the young men who "Had come forward so nohly to answtr the call of the Empire at this time of trouble. Incidentally he referred to a communication (which has already been published) he had received from the Minister of-'De-fence expressing his high appreciation of the splendid way in which the young men pf Taranaki were coming forward. At. the present time there was a good deal of talk about conscription, but if all districts did as well as Taranaki there would be very little need for conscription in the Dominion, at any rate. He tendered the appreciation af the pco ; pie of the district to the men who were about to leave to go into camp for training for coming forward at great personal sacrifice to assist the Mother Country, and said they looked to them to do their part to uphold the glorious traditions which had been won by the New Zcalandcrs at Callipoli. He expressed the hope that they would have a pleasant time in eamn. and that ere long the people would have an opportunity of welcoming them back victorious. Cheers were given for the men, who then marched on to the station. As the time drew near for the departure of "the train the band played a number of patriotic airs, and Bugler Walker sounded several calls. The train steamed out of the station to the strains of "Auld Lang Syne" and amid the cheers of the assembled crowd. The following were the men who left:—
