RUSSIA'S TASK.
THE RECAPTURE OF CZERNOWITZ CZAR AT THE FRONT * Received .Tan. D, 5.3 p.m. J'etrogj-ad, Jan. 8. The Russians' main attack at Czernowitz was preceded by a bombardment. Four hundred guns for fifty hours rained shells continuously on the town, and the infantry charge followed immediately.
The Czar has taken up his headquar tcrs in the vicinity.
SOME DESPERATE FIGHTING. ENEMY LOSES HEAVILY. Received Jan. 10, 12.10 a.m. Petrograd, Jan. 0. A communique reports: The enemy drove us out of Czarlorysk, hut we counter-attacked and recaptured the town, which we have held firmly since. Our troops in the middle Strypa" region captured sections of the enemy's position', taking over a thousand prisoners. Desperate enemy counter-attacks with large forces, north-east of Czernowitz, were all repulsed with enormous enemy losses.'
