TURF TOPICS. ;r.y "Moluroa.") Taranaki entries close on Friday ,. , Draft broke down at the fctralionl ineclin:,'. Mulirii Bill won a race at Greymouth last week. Th> Knjilish-lirod Piiiimiire is nothing short of n" top-iiol'.-liur. Depredation drew a blank at Jlnr-ton, al; ,l lu igl,t have done better at Strutford. _. .. r.cwi Poto won the Summer Handicap in hollow fashion, and paid a line price. Crawford and Welcome Niifgct were all at sea on Hie Stratford course, but look out at Hawera. The-e was an awful lot of "rubbish in I he' "lium-ups" at Stratford. Beyond the placed horses the others probity owed their presence on a racecourse to (lie introduction of the motor hoarse. Wn'step who broke down in the Auckland" Cun. won practically every fir.=tpl.,„ rv « in New Zealand, and gathered in'tlie tidy sum of £lo,l™ in stakes Rl O%eCnrtcn and W. Taranaki trainers practically all him a turn of fortune's wheel at the meeti„o H. Eva (Tneimi), I>. J. BoodW hi (Avon Park), C. Jackson (Royal CM) T Pir.e (Vestalis), R. Brougli (Maid o' Cowrie), R. Johnson (Parnon), \V. Mantle (Bisogne), R Barlow (Sylvan Dale), J. George (Clcnroy), T. F. Coddard (Tirana), ana J. Iryei (Col-
lector, twice), were the successful 01109. Only two stakes, 'those won by Tarero and Vladiau escaped their grasp. Winning owners at Stratford were: Messrs Moetahunga £3lO, D. J. Goodwin £2OO, A. Alexander £IBO, IT. Cleland £IBO, T. P. Goddard £IOO, J. George £l5O, J. Britton £l2O, Emcny and Lampitt £l2O, J. Cameron £llO, G E. Clout £lO3. H. Spratt £IOO, K, Child .CSO, ('.'. Brown £RO, A. Desert Gold swept all before her at Ellorslie. winning in stakes £2300. Her total winnings to date amount to £81)15. In addition Mr. T. 11. Lowry won the Auckland Cup with Balboa, the Railway Handicap with Tete-a-tete, and minor stakes wiih Bjomeborg, Egypt, and Marco Bello, which hoisted his winnings at the Auckland meeting to £5820. Southerners took the lion's share of 'tiie line stakes offered at Ellersljc. In addition to Mr. Lowrv's £SS2O. Mr. W. G. Siead took £2105. Mr. C. L. Stead £1215, Hon. ,f. D. Onnond £llsO, and Mr. I'. .1. Watt £750. The principal Auckland winner was Mr. R. Hannon, whoso share was £10(13.
Racing at. Stratford did not supply many remarkable features. Tneuru won ■the Cup on her merits, and despite a hard run shaped well again on the second day. Avon Park showed improved form in (ho Malone Memorial Handicap, but her partv seemed to anticipate it. Ratana and King f'hiara ran well, but without luck. If the latter had notbeen made so much u-se of on the se.'cnd day lie might have won. Welcome JJu<r. get was disappointing, but 0.1 stopped Aim when the rising ground came to be tackled at the conclusion of the Cup. The sprinters were a fairly even lot, and finishes v. ere ebse In this division. Tirana, who was heated by Depredation at New Plymouth, was equal to beating Crown Pearl, Tree Lucerne, and Play Oif in tho Douglas Handicap, but Tree Lucerne only had to he decently handled to have won either day. Oienroy was produced in the Ng.aeve Handicap, and on the strength of a 1.17 trial the previous morning, was heavily supported and duly won. Play Off was out of his element on the uneven course, but his second day's form suggests that he will win a good race next month. The hurdlers were a poor lot. Cornice ran honestly each day, but Vladian and Tarero (on Monday) held too many guns for her. Tarero ran, badly on the opening day, but the bcCting market did not suggest that Marton-ites were prepared for Monday's improved showing. Collector, Paraoa, Royal Chef, Bisogne, arid White Blaze ran consistently, and with more luek than at New Plvniouth.
Eight fir*ts out of nine starts was the fii.e record put up by J. Bryce at the Auckland Trotting Club's summer meeting. It was a marvellous performance, but no doubt Bryce had something good to bring him home in front each time.
Taringa'mulu was the crack at the Wairarapa summer meeting, winning the big race each day from end to end. She was giving away a lot of weight, but outclassed the opposition badly. Subsequent running sets one wondering how King Lupin fame to lose the Railway Handicap. Both he and Bimeter had bad passages in the big sprint, hut both scored in fast time later on. King Lupin won the Newmarket Handicap very easily in 1.12 4-5, and Bimcter ran down (lie six furlongs in the County Handicap in 1.13 2-5. They arc ''some sprinters!" They were picking them well on the second day at Recfton, six out of llio seven winners being scalding hot favorites, while the other favorite finished second.
Kinpcrador, who is considered n certain stnrter at Ilawcm, showed his best form in flip Palmerston North Stnkos, winning all the way from Rnngitcro, Hythroad and two other?. The course was against fast time, and the 'clock read "1.1.7'' for the gallop. Owners! , Don't forget Egmont envies on Holiday night.
