Official.—There have been desperate engagements south of the Pripet region on the Caucasian front. The Turks attempted to cross the river Arkkava, south of Khopa, but were stopped by our fire. On the Persian front, south of Urmia, we had several engagements with Turks and Khurds, and south of Hamadan some fighting with Persian gendarmerie HAND-TO-HAND FIGHTING. ENEMY CLAIMS SUCCESSES. Amsterdam, January 1. Austrian accounts state that the Russians concentrated two hundred guns and three divisions on a front of three miles and made a preliminary bombardment lasting thirty-six l hours. The Austrians claim to have repulsed twentytwo assaults, mostly desperate hand-to-hand fighting. Berlin, January 1. Official. —The Russians were repulsed in Eastern Galicia owing to an effective flanking movement. AUSTRIAN LINES SMASHED. VIOLENT BATTLE IN GALICIA. Paris, January 1. Le Temps sa}'s a most violent battle iR raging in Western Galicia. The Russians succeeded in smashing the Austrian lines and forcing General Von Bothmes to retreat in certain sections of the front.
