WAITARA.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) Waitara, Yesterday. The Waitara Band made a tour of the town in the early hours of Christmas morning, playing Christmas carols, and a house-to-house collection in aid of the funds resulted in the sum of £29 13s 6d being raised, which shows that the efforts of the band arc greatly appreciated. On Christmas Eve,, the band .played a number of appreciative selections in Queen Street, and to-morrow, at midnight, will play a number of selections on the bridge, playing the Old Year out and the New Year in. Private. J. Canton, who is at present home on leave, was presented at the bowling green on Christmas afternoon with a wristlet watch, as a small token of esteem in which ITe was held by the members of the club. In making the presentation Mr. J. W. Foreman expressed a wish that Private Canton would soon be in their midst again. Tho s.s. Limerick is expected in the roadstead on Tuesday next direct from Sydney, to lift a cargo of frozen meat. Private F. C. Brown, of the sth' Reinforcements, who was invalided home and came by tlv3 Maunganui, reached Waitara last Tuesday evening. He was met at the station by the Mayor and a number of townspeople, who gave him a hearty reception. Private Brown contracted rheumatic fever while in Egypt, and after being a short time ill the trenches he was invalided.
