STRATFORD.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) ■Stratford, Yesterday. Over eighty motor-cars passed through the toll gate at Waipuku on Monday last. The Opunake Eoad, near the Cardiff Bridge, is in a fearful state at present, The County staff are regrading the road, and the recent wet weather has made it a quagmire. Eight motor-cars were stuck 011 Christmas Day, and visitors making the mountain trip to Dawson Falls house should try another route until the road is completed. The inquest that was held yesterday had to take place in the Police Station because the officials in charge of the courthouse were away on holidays. The police station was altogether inadequate for the purpose, and the jury had to stand during the whole of the proceedings. One could overlook the matter if this was the first time that this inconvenience had occurred but the police and public have suffered this inconvenience more than once. It is time that the Justice Department took a hand, and prevented a recurrence of this. In the past the police have generally been supplied with the keys of the courthouse, aiul there does not seem to be any reason why they could not have been supplied 011 this or any other occasion, and not put the public to a lot of trouble simply to satisfy '-'red tape." A very pretty wedding took place at the Holy Trinity Church this afternoon before Rev. Geddes, when Marjorie, the eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Hignett, was united in the holy bonds of matrimony to Thomas Ernest, son of Mr and Mrs. S. Rabone, of Karori, Wellington. The bride was beautifully attired in white crepe de chine, and shadow lace carrying a very handsome bouquet of white roses and maiden hair fern. She was attended by her sister, Miss A. Hignett, who wore a very pretty dress of white silk voile. The bridegroom was attended by Sergeant Paul Rabone. After the ceremony, a reception was held at the home of the bride's parents. The happy couple left for Wanganui, the bride's travelling dress being a grey tailor-made costume. Mr. J. Melville died suddenly at his residence on the Pembroke Road this afternoon. This afternoon he took a suddent turn and passed away from heart disease.
