BULGARIA'S AWFUL INGRATITUDE.
Tic "ft that King Ferdinand of Bulgaria liit; allied himself with the Turk at tht> moment when Turkey is engaged in slaughtering out the unhappy Armenians may well make the world gasp. Only forty years ago—in IS76—Bulgaria itself was 'emerging, with the help of Great Britain and Russia, from exactly i such a baptism of blood at the hands of the Turk. '•There were people in Turkish, territory," says the Morning Post, who hardly' ventured to call themselves either Bulgars or Christiana, so abject their condition and so ferocious the tyranny under which they groaned. | vVhen nt last they were goaded to rebellion their men were slaughtered and their women were raped by the Bashijßazouks." It was this massaore whirh kindled to a flame Mr Gladstone's eloquence; and one of the London journals has republished the address presented by Bulgaria, at the moment of its deliverlance, to Great Britain: — - 1 If ever the Bulgarians breathe again, if ever they succeed in throwing off the yoke of slavery which has weighed on them for five centuries, if ever they acquire the right to live, not as a nation of slaves, but as a free people governing (hemselcs, the honor of the achievement will be due in the greatest measurs to the noble English people. Russe, however, did more to save Bulgaria from the Turk than even Fngland. She gave her blood and treasure to I achieve this. The war with Turkey of 1877-8 was fought to save Bulgaria,. As the Morning Post puts it; "Bulgaria was rescued from Turkey, whom she now proposes to make her ally, by Russia, against whom she now proposes to war. It is as if Andromeda were to form a league with the dragon against Perseus. The Bulgarians are turning their back on their race, their religion, and their history. They arc joining their enslavers against those who gave them freedom. They are siding with the Turk against the Russian."
