RURAL WORK COMPETITIONS. In the rural work competitions at the Egmont A. and P. Show the awards for best kept school grounds were made on Tuesday by Mr. Browne. The maximum points obtainable were 100, divided as follows: (1) Approach to Bchool and condition of fences, 25; (2) arrangement of shrubs, flower borders, lawns, etc., 25; (3) vegetable gardens, position, cultivation, etc., 25; (4) orchard, 25. Tokaora was awarded first with 98 points; Mangatoki second with 89; Okaiawa third with 81; Matapu fourth with 07.

For the best plot of lucerne and best orchard Tokaora scored a first in each ease. The judge's comments on the grounds and the marks awarded will be of interest, and will enable unsuccessful schools to see where improvements may be made.

Tokaora—(l) Fences well kept, each variety named, approach good, marks 25; (2) shrubs well grown, cultivation clean, lawns well cut, flowers weak, 23; (3) vegetable cultivation good, plants healthy and excellent growth, 25 j (4) very good trees in proper position, made good growth, no weeds, 25. Mangatoki Fences excellent, approach fair, marks 25; (2) lawn good, beds weak, well kept, 20; (3) well kept and labelled, good growth, and variety fair, 24; (4) trees young, exposed to wind, 20.

Okaiawa—(l) Fences weak, would suggest planting shelter trees, marks 17; (2) flower borders well kept, good variety, lawn excellent, 23; (3) very good, making splendid growth, 24; (4) trees small and wind swept, 20. Mfttapu— (1) Good, marks 20; (2) beds well kept and free from weeds, 22; (3) backwards, cultivation good, 15; (4) in bad position, trees suffering from
