SYNTHETIC FOODS. HUNS ALARMED AT POSSIBLE BEER FAMINE. Received Dec. 20, 7.5 p.m. Berne, Dec. 19. The Austro-Germans are alarmed at a possible beer famine, and prices are rising. They are experimenting with a production from maize. German markets are flooded with synthetic foods, such as honey powders, tea and cocoa tablets, grog tabloids, and innumerable egg substitutes, which are mostly worthless. Professor Kruse advises a diet of bread, potatoes, and syrup. r THE KAISER'S CHRISTMAS. TO BE SPENT AT THE FRONT. Received Dec. 20, 7.25 p.m. / Amsterdam, Dec. 19. Berlin newspapers state that the Kaiser and Kaiserin will spend Christmas at the German headquarters in France. A request for the Princes to spend Christmas in Berlin was refused. DISCONTENT IN BERLIN. Amsterdam, Dec. 19. An Englishman with a German-born wife, who has been allowed to leave Germany, declares that the authorities !n Berlin fear a revolt owing to discontent. There had been several riots and women had plundered «fche shops. Police and Uhlaiia charged the crowds. THE NEED FOR GOLD. Berne, Dec. 19. Herr Hellferich has or'dered all private safes in the German banks to be opened and any gold therein to be seized. PAPER SUSPENDED. London, Dee. 19. The Lokal Anzeiger's issue of Saturday was prohibited, despite its reputation as an inspired, if not semi-official organ.
