MEN FROM OVERSEAS

HOW THEY WILL SPEND CHRISTMAS. London, Dec. 19. There is a splendid response to the Daily Telegraph movement inviting overi seas soldiers in England to spend Christmas with English families. The Young Men's Christian Association took up the scheme. Some families are inviting' parties, and others want overseas men to take the places of their own sons who are at the front. Already half a million has been subscribed for Y.M.C.A. work among the soldiers in different war theatres, of which £20,000 has been expended ia Egypt and the Dardanelles, mostly among Australasian troops. The Association is appealing for a further quarter of a million. Mr. Virgo hopes that Australasian sympathisers will contribute £25,000. METERS' SPLENDID GIFT. London, Dec. 19. Lord Derby, at Bolton, inspected twenty ambulance cars, a portion of the gift of the Lancashire and Cheshire miners, for which they subscribed £36,000. MORE BARTLETT. RUNNING THE WAR BY PEN. Received Dec. 20, 7.2f> p.m. London, Dec. 19. : Mr. Ashmead Bartlett writes that Germany's threat on Egypt is mere bluff. The campaign of 1916 must be won or compromised over on Germany's Eastern or Western fronts, and the prime factor will be largely the extent of the Russians' recovery from the tremendous shock of the past year. Unless the Allies drive the Germans within their natural frontiers during the spring and summer of 1918, it will be hardly possible to make another serious effort. If we fail we will be unbeaten, but will he reduced to a state of stalemate, and those whose finances and resources will bear the strain will finally be victorious. Hence it is of paramount importance to husband our resources and strength for an indefinite number of rounds if we fail to deliver a knockout blow in the summer.
