THE TWELFTHS.
TARANAKI TO SUPPLY 152 MEN. DISTRICT SHOWS A SURPLUS. It is understood the Twelfth Rein» forcemeats, to go into camp about the middle of January, will be about £!2O strong and that the districts will supply men in the following numbers: — Auckland , 599 Wellington 751 Canterbury 515 Otago 365 Dominion total .... 2220 The present position of the Wellington Military District (including Taranaki) ia remarkable. There are enough men on the recruits' registers in the district to fill the district quota of the 12th Reinforcements, who are to go into camp in the middle of .January. Yet the district has not found its quota for the 11th draft, which was due in camp last week. Moreover, the 10th Reinforcei mentis not full, and Wellington has not sent all the men asked of it for that draft. Wellington, of course, sent more than its quota for the 10th, but has rot made up all the shortages it was asked to. Taranaki is asked to supply 152 men as follows: 28 mounted, 11 artillery, 7 engineers, 1 signaller, 101 infantry, 3 Army Service Corps, and 3 ambulance. The returns issued by the Defence Department show that while Taranaki has to supply 152 men, there are available 208, leaving a substantial surplus.
