ESCAPE FROM DROWNING.
A SMART RESCUE. About 7 o'clock last evening a young woman named Dorothy Man had a narrow escape from losing her life by bathing, it appears that Miss Man, who is employed at the Terminus Hotel, was surf bathing on the beach in company with some children, when she ventured out too far and was carried awav by the back-wash. Although she is a' fairly good swimmer she was soon in difficulties. Her cries for help were heard by some people on the Ibeach, and two men (Messrs M. Collier and IS. Smythe) who were swimming some distance away, realised the young woman's plight and swam out to her rescue. Collier reached her first, and supported her till Smythe came along and started to convey "the young woman to shore, against a fairly strong current. Smythe had got into shallow water with his unconscious burden, when he collapsed from his exertions, and Collier brought Miss Man to the beach, from whence she was taken to the Terminus Hotel. Medical aid was speedily available, and at a late hour last night she had recovered consciousness and was progressing favorably. Mr. Smythe, who was completely exhausted, soon recovered. Too much credit cannot to given to Messrs Smythe and Collier for the manner ill which they grasped the situation, and for their gallantry in swimming out to and rescuing the young woman, who would undoubtedly have lost ber life ,but for their prompt aid.
