FRANKLEY SCHOOL
' BREAKING-UP CONCERT. " ' A new departure was ivxa<lo by the Frank I"v .school-children' tliis year when, instead of the usual breaking-up ceremony, a concert was given in aid of the Wounded Soldiers' Fund last night, and as a result over £1(1 was netted. The gymnasium was crowded with parents and Iriends, who were entertained by the children with a very lengthy and varied programme, every item of which wa3 creditable alike to the youngsters and to the teachers, Mr. Winiield (headmaster), Misses Parli and Hare. The costuming and arranging were good and some pretty ellects were accomplished, despite limited stage room. Encores were very numerous and the programme was as follows: (Song, infants; recitation, '/The Old ■Maid," Rita Boulton; song, "Three Old Maids of Lee," Elsie Cole, Keitlia and Jean Bullot; recitation, "The Man and the Cheese," King Cole; song, "The New Fairyland," infant girls; recitation, "The Torch of Life," Lindsay Williams; song, "Up From Somerset," girls; recitation, "An Experiment," May Duncan; umbrella song, junior boys and girls; recitation, "An Annoying Mistake," Lily Sadler; spng, "Knitting," [senior girls; song, seniors:; recitation, "The Ghost of a Gooseberry Pie," Newton Roch; fan song, junior girls; physical drill, boys; recitation, "Not Understood," Eileen Ballantyne; song and chorus, "When Belgium put the Kibosh on the Kaiser," Jessie Hamilton: song, "The Laughing Trio." Miss Hare, played all the accompaniments. At the conclusion, Mr, W. Hooker, 'chairman of the committee, made reference to the sacrifice that the children had willingly made in giving up their prizes.
Mr. Winfield (headmaster) said that he was sure these certificates would be highly valued, especially in the years to come. The present roll" number was 11G, and the accommodation was very inadequate. The use of the gymnasium for teaching purposes was unsatisfactory, but he was afraid there was little prospect of an addition to the school at the present.
The following children passed the Standard VI, examination, six gaining proficiency, and one competency: Eileen Ballantyne, Keitlia Bullot, 'Winifred Downes (11 years), Constance IJawke, Olive Ducker, Lindsay Williams, and Margaret Lovell. Eileen Ballantyne and Keitlia Bullot also gained, during the year, prizes for writing at the New Plymouth and Inglewood Shows. In conclusion, he thanked Miss Parli and Hare for their hearty co-operation in the work of the school, also the committee for their assistance at all times. The following were then presented with certificates which bore the following inscription:—"As the British Empire is now engaged in the great European War in which New Zealand is nobly doing her part, the Frankley School children have voluntarily agreed to give their prize fund towards the relief of Wounded Soldiers."
