RED CROSS SOCIETY.

A NEW PLYMOUTH BRANCH. There was a very large attendance of ladies and gentlemen at the meeting held in the Town Hall last night to consider the formation of a 'branch of the British Red Cros3 Society. An apology was received for the absence of Mrs. Dowling. Mr. C. H. Burgess (Mayor) presided, and briefly explained the objects of the meeting. Mrs. Dockrill, secretary of the New Plymouth centre of the St. John Ambulance Society, read the resolutions, published yesterday, that were passed at a meeting convened by the Governor for the purpose of co-ordinating efforts ai..l preventing overlapping in Red Cross work. The meeting was attended by 60 representatives of St. John Ambulance and Red Cross Societies from all parts of the Dominion.

After some discussion, it was unanimously decided, on the motion of .Viesdames Crooke and Walker, to form a branch of the British Red '"'ross Society in New Plymouth.

Officers were appointed as follows: — President, Mr. C. H. Burgess (Mayor); vice-presidents, the Mayoress and Mesdames E. A. Walker and A. Crooke j committee, Matthews, Alexander, Bartley, Fair, Courtney, Jas. Wilson, Martin, and Misses Percy-Smith, Phyllis Crooke, and Godfrey. The appointment of secretary and treasurer was left in the hands of tho committee. It was pointed out that this position would entail a good deal of work, and that it would be advisable to appoint a man to the position. It was decided that the subscription should be fixed at a minimum of Is per month; an amendment that the question be deferred until information was received from Wellington being defeated.

The question of recommending a representative on the Council, three being required from the Wellington district, was referred to the committee to deal with.
