SCHEME TO RAISE FUNDS. GALA DAY TO BE HELD. The New Plymouth Patriotic Committee met last night. Present: Messrs CI Carter (chairman), C. H. Burgess, C. E Bellringer, W. J. Chaney, H. Goodacre. D. Hughes, Ji Paton, ,T. R. Hill, T. G Mst, W. C. Weston, E. Griffiths, Captain Allen, and the Revs. A. H. Colvile and A. B. Ohappell.

Mr. Bellringer brought up the question of holding a gala day for the purpose of making a big effort to raise patriotic funds, and lie suggested that the occasion of the opening of the trams should be used as a suitable day. Everyone in the town would be required to assist in making a united effort, and if an attractive function was arranged there would, no doubt, be a large attendance of country people. He moved (hat a gala day should be held on the day of the opening of the trams, the proceeds to be devoted to the Patriotic Fund, and that Messrs Carter, Paton, Goodacre, Hughes, Hill, List. Griffiths, and the mover be a committee (with representatives from the East End, Kawaroa, and Ngainotu Seaside Committees) to carry out the scheme. The chairman, in seconding the motion, said that if the gala was well carried out they should raise a large amount of money. The motion was carried.

It was further decided to ask the Borough Council to appoint a committee to work with this committee. THE COLLECTION' SCHEME. The scheme for carrying out a systematic. house to house collection at fixed periods for the Patriotic Fund was again brought up. The sub-committee appointed to go into the question reported that the collecting system already in existence should he extended throughout the whole of the New Plymouth district: that the town should be laid oH* in blocks, and that a sub-committee should be appointed for each block: that cards be prepared for signature by those willing to subscribe during the war: and that Messrs Griffiths and Paton should be appointed to draw up a card for subscribers to sign. The sub-committee appointed to fixcollecting bloclcs presented a report setting out boundaries for fourteen blocks, the supervisors to he as follows: —Block 1 Mr. E. Griffiths. block 2 Mr. C. Bellringer. block 3 Mr. J. Gibson, block -1 Mr. H. Goodacre. block 3 Mr. 1). J. Hughes, blocK G Mr. F. C. J. Tiellringer, block 7 Adjutant Home, block 8 Mr. 0. X. Firth, block 0 Mr. L. A. Nolan. biocK 10 Mr. W. II Moves, block 11 Mr. J. R. Hill, block 12 Mr. W. A. Collis. block 1.1 Mr. J. S. S. Medley, block 14 Mr. J. Clarke. The recommendations contained in both reports were adopted. Mr. Bcllringer expressed the opinion that if the scheme was properly worked there was no reason whv £10.00(1 should not be collected in this district every year.

It was decided that the chairman, treasurer,.assistant treasurer, and blo.k supervisors should be a committee to control the collection of snbscrictions. The question of sotting the scheme in motion was left to the sub-committee. - SAXD BAGS FOR THE FROXT. The question of collecting bags to be forwarded to the front for use as sand bags was again referred to by Mr. Hughes, who said New Plymouth was worse than any other part of Taranaki in this matter. He said bags were st.il) left to rot, when, by a little trouble, they could be made to do good service. A few bags were coming to hand, but he thought if they were advertised for a better response would be made.

It was decided to appoint Messrs Firth and Hughes a committee to deal with the matter, and they were empowered to advertise for bags.

GENERAL. A letter was received from Mr. J. E. Wilson thanking the committee for its resolution of sympathy. Pleasure was expressed that Mr. Wilson was improving after his recent operation. It was pointed out that the next meeting of the committee fell during the holidays, and it was decided to leave the calling of the next meeting to the chairman. The chairman, the Mayor, and the secretary were appointed an executive to deal with any matters arising in the interval.
