TRADING WITH THE ENEMY.

To the Editor. Sir, —After reading an address by Mr. Penn and the discussion thereon at the •New Plymouth Chamber of Commerce, it is only possible to arrive at one conclusion, for when a gathering of wholesalers ialmost unanimously decide that after the war, we shall have to deal on "fair terms" with Germany and not have a prohibitive tariff put on,their goods, it is perfectly obvious that they make more money out of German goods than out of English. New Zealand is making money out of the war, .and England i s losing by it, yet after it is all over we are to revert to the old order of things at England's expense! If the discussion represents the opinion of the majority of the Chamber of Commerce in New Zealand, i.why not write to the Kaiser about it? I am sure he would reward them after the war with sufficient to enable them to "chuck" the wholesale business which they have run, and intend running with such "patriotic spirit." That England is conservative, X admit, but God forbid that a commission of New Plymouth business men should be told off to teach them how to conduct their commercial pursuits! Thanking you for the space and regretting that some abler person than myself has not had something to say about this matter.—l am, etc., BRITISHER. Okato, Dec. 6, 1915.
