Commander N. do la Cour Cornwall, R.N.R., late in command of the New Zealand Shipping Company's steamer Tongarfro, has accepted service under the Admiralty. Mr. Wi Pere, ex-M.P. for the Eastern Maori .District, and formerly a member of the Legislative Council, is at present seriously ill in Gisborue. He lias been confined to bed for the past three months, A London message states that Mr. Gustave Wand, recently musical director of the Gaiety and Adclphi Theatre, died in the Alexandra Palace internmeirt camp. There »«, reports the Star, a large gathering of members of the Bar at the Hawera S.M. Court yesterday, when .Mr. Halliwell expressed' the regret felt at the necessity for the Magistrate, Mr. Kenrick, going on leave, and the wish that he would return to resume his. duties with, renewed vigor. Deceased, who was born at Croydon, Surrey, S,") years ago, enlisted at the ago of 18 In the Rifle Brigade. lie fought through the Crimean War, including the battles of Alma, Balaclava, >oh,iMiipol. and lnkerman. The Crimean medal he held had the clasps tor these battle-:, hut he Tost the clasp for ScbiiHopol. lie also held the Turkish medal. Later he came to Xcw Zealand, and joined tile Commissariat Corps, with which lie served through the Maori War. lieturning afterwards to Aldershot, he married, and then came hack to New Zealand 30 years ago, settling in Christchureh, For about 2i years ite was employed at the Cbri-lchiiivh Hospital, in the engine-room, retiring about eight years ago. His wife died about seven years ago. Ho leaves three sons and four daughter:.
