The Stratford Racing' Club's annual meeting, which is held at New Year, is always one of the most popular holiday gatherings in Taranaki. Following within a week of the Taranaki Christmas meeting it helps to make up a four days' racing carnival—which not only keeps most Taranaki "sports" at home for the- New Year, but also attracts a 'big crowd of visitors to this province. Taranaki nominations were record ones last week, and it is only reasonable to presume that the entries received by Mr. Alf. Coleman this evening will also show an advance on previous figures. A glance at the stakes shows that fine stakes arc ofl'orod all round. For open company there are the following events:—Stratford Cup, of 350 sovs., 1% miles; Malone Memorial Handicap, of 250 sovs., S l / 3 furlongs; Douglas Handicap, of 200 sovs., C furlongs; and Ngaere Handicap, of 150 sovs., 6 furlongs. Hurdlers are well catered for, the Ohura Hurdles, of 150 sovs, 1% miles, and the Malum Hurdles, of 125 sovs., 1% miles, being events which should draw well. The programme is completed with hack flat events, the stakes for which vary from 100 sovs. to 160 sots. It is a most attractive menu. Those interested should note that nominations close to-night at & p.m., but the Stratford telegraph office closes at 8 p.m. Mr. Alf, Coleman P.O. Bos 7S| Stratford, should be a busy man tonight.
