AMUSEMENTS.

THE EMPIRE. A story abounding in action entitled "The Better Man," nn adaption of the well-known book by the Reverend Townsend Brady, is the main attraction on to-day's new programme. The drama is full of powerful situations shoeing the conflict between- capital and labor and ■ the ambitions of two clergymen. « The supporting films include the latest topical news from Europe in "Pathe's Gazette," arid "The Great War" (Eclair Journal), and a stirring Edison drama, "Dickson's Diamonds." A good scenic study, "Palma," is also shown. Suit may be reserved at the Theatre. .

ROYAL PICTURES. To-day's new programme features "The Straight and Narrow Path." Harris' lustful eyes have long noticed Frances, an employee in the Dominick Store, but she has resisted his advances. The solo support of her mother, her heart is filled with fear lest she is dismissed. The proprietor seeks the assistance of Ijenore, in his effort to solve the mysterious thefts which cost him thousands of dollars annually. The investigator, aided by Talcott, finds a weak spot in Harris. The sleutlies learn that the general manager has compelled Frances to promise to attend a stage party he is to give that evening. Calling upon the girl, Leonora finds her clad in a gown which Harris had taken from the store and sent to her. Fearing dismissal, Frances turns a deaf ear to Leonore's pleas not to attend the affair. In the meantime, Taleott has won Harris' friendship, and is invited to the party. At the proper moment, the attendants enter with a huge urn. This is placed on the table. When opened Frances is found within. She rushes from the place, aided by Talcott, and attempts to slay herself, but is saved by J.ronore in the nick of time. A trap is laid for Harris, and he is discovered rifling a safe and arrested. On the supporting programme is "How Mary Fixed It," * pleasing comedy, in which the World's favourite artist. Mary I'ickford, is seen, together with Owen Moore. The departure of some of our Maori warriors is entitled, "Auckland's Send-off to the Maori Reinforcements."
