STOCK SALE.

MR. GORDON SALWAY'S MILKING SHORTHORNS. The high prices ruling for beef for the last few years past, has had the effect of turning the attention of dairy farmers to the general utility cow and as a consequence there has been an increasing demand for the milking type of Shorthorn cattle. At Bell Block yesterday, Mr. Gordon Salway's clearing sale of pedigree and registered and grade Shorthorns attracted a very large attendance, buyers being / present from all parts of the North Is-' land and competition was very keen. The pedigree hull and cows with their progeny imported from Australia were ih nice condition, and realised excellent prices. Mr. Seccombe, of Auckland, who was a strong competitor throughout the sale secured the three-year-old bull, Rose Prince of Darbalara, and the four-year-old cow Camelia XI., while Mr. Primrose McConnell on behalf of the Dilworth School of Agriculture, Papatoetoe, purchased the four-year-old cow Dainty VII., and also her ]S-months heifer Lady Mary. The registered cow Nancy, with a record of 79.981bs butterfat in 30 days fell to Mr. L. Hann, of Stratford, who afterwards transferred her to Mr. McConnell at a substantial advance on the price paid. The pedigree Shorthorn stock sold as follows:

Three-year bull Rose Prince of Darbalara (imp.), by Emblem of Darbalara—Rose of Bolaro, sold to Mr. C. Seecombe (Te Telui) at 70 guineas.

Five-month bull Dainty's Prince, Mr. E. L. Hann (Stratford) 48 guineas.

Six l months bull Cainelia's Prince (imp.), by Radium of Darbalara —Camelia Xl,' Mr. C. Hosldn (Bell Block), 52 guineas. Bull calf Camelia's Pride, Mr. J. Stronge (Oaonui), 44 guineas. Four-year cow Dainty VII (imp.), by TrentT>n-Dainty II (first prize winner 2year cow in milk, Sydney Royal Show, 1014), Mr. Primrose'McConneil (of the Dihvorth School of Agriculture, Papatoetoe, Auckland), 130 guineas. Eighteen-month heifer Lady Mary (imp.), by Cameo—Dainty VIT, same purchaser, 112 guineas. Four-year cow Camelia XI (imp.), by Playboy—Camelia VI, Mr. C. Seecombe, 100 guineas. Bidding was very brisk for seven fine looking Shorthorn <iows, which although not carrying pedigrees were registered in the N.Z. Milking Shorthorn Herd Book. The top price of 73 guineas was paid for Nancy, with a record of Solbs of milk in one day, prices of the balance ranging from 11 to SO gns; heifer calf, by Rose Prince of Darbalara out of a registered cow 2flgns; bull calves out of registered cows, by Rose Prince of Darbalara from 10 to 2figns; bull calves, by Rose Prince of Darbalara out of grade cows, from £2 to £0 10s, and grade cows from £S to £2O.
