Mr. R. J. Linn, of Normanby, left by the mail train yesterday for Auckland, where he is to judge the Jersey section at the A. and P. Show to-day. Mr. H. A. E. Milnes, principal of the Auckland Training College, has enlisted. He will leave for Trentham with the next draft of infantry non-commissioned officers.; ;;;<>;. The Employers' Federation has decided to recommend Mr. William Scott as successor to Mr. E. F. Duthie as employer's representative on the Arbitration Couit. Mr. W. G. Wickkam, British Trade Commissioner in New Zealand, has been appointed to South Africa, and leaves at the end of the year.—'Press Association. News has been received in Wellington that Lieutenant-Colonel J. Hughes will return to New Zealand as soon as he ia sufficiently recovered. LieiitenantColonel Hughes left for the Dardanelles with the Main Expeditionary Force. Mr. R. G. dimming, who has been manager for Messrs. A. Hatrick and Co., in Waitara and New Plymouth for the past six months, has resigned to take up a simlar position for Messrs. Levin and Co. at Hawera and Patea.
Mr. W. W. Lindsay, 8.1 i., prinoipal of the China Inland Mission Preparatory School at Ruling, China, has just died. Mr. Lindsay was trained for the law, but left that profession to become editor of the English edition of "China's Millions."
Mr. Andrew .Thompson, of Wanganui, was presented with a special certificate by the Presbyterian Assembly to mark the close of his 63rd year of Sunday School teaching. The Rev. J. D. MeKenzie, of St. Paul's, Wanganui, in accepting the certificate on Mr. Thompson's behalf, said he was proud to be associated with such a worker. Mr. Thomp» son was over 80 years of age.
The Rev. Mr. Fraer is to be retained for another six months in Europe aB chaplain to the Maoris, especially with the Maori wounded in England. The church authorities in the Old Country have specially requested this, owing to the number of Maoris sick, wounded, or convalescent, 'who value a friend they knew well to specially look after their interests.
An old and muclf-respected citizen of Wellington, Mr. Charles Henry Chatwin, died on Monday. The deceased was born in Birmingham, and served his apprenticeship to the printing trade in that city. He left England with his wife in the early 'fifties for' Victoria, and lived in Melbourne and various goldfields districts before coming to New Zealand. He worked at his trade for some time in Dunedin, and then went to Wellington under engagement to Messrs Lyon and Blair, about the year 1874, and* held the position of factory manager to them until they sold their business to Messrs Whitcombe and Tombs. He afterwards became overseer for Messrs C. M. Banks. He is survived by a widow, two daughters and three sons.
An Ingiewod correspondent writes to the Dominion: With the troops that passed through Christchurch last week, when the Eighths made their memorable visit to this city, were two grandsons of an old pioneer, the late Captain R. E. Haworth, of the 4th Royal Lancashire Light Infantry, who, with the late. Sir Michael (!. Fleming, had a ahcep station at the Hokohernwea in the ilfties. They are sons of Mr. E. R. A. Haworth, of Inglewood, Taranaki. The eldest, Private Lionel Haworth, is in the Eighths, the second son, Corporal Mervyn W. Haworth, is in the fiths, now at Gallipoli, and the third son, Sergeant-Major Lawrence R. P. Haworth, is in the 2nd Reinforcements of the N.Z.R.B. (Lord Liverpool's Own). All three have thrown up lucrative appointments in the North Island to join the King's colorß, and "do their bit" for the Empire. They arc also grandsons of the late Mr. Robert Wood, of Milford, Tcmuka.
