Included in this was 1050 tons for Auckland. This lire is the third that has occurred within the past few months on vessels trading between New York and New Zealand. In May last, the Oanastota, while loading at New York, was afire in one hold. The fire was extinguished and tile vessel proceeded on her voyage. On Tuesday, the Dutch steamer Riouw was reported to have reached Capetown 011 Are, and this week the lire on the Indian ,Monarch was reported. In shipping circles these lires are regarded very suspiciously, and the opinion is freely expressed that German agents in New York are the responsible parties. Mr. Cromer, of Christchureh, had fifteen of tile new model Cadillac motor-cars on board the Indian Monarch. This represents a value of about £7OOO or | £BOOO, and, though the cars are covered by insurance, the inconvenience caused 'will be great. It is understood that Messrs. <T. J. Niven and Company, and Messrs. Kibblewhite and Vauglun have large quantities of valuable motor gooas, l*tn«4 and toolg on board.
