WAITARA.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) Waitara, Nov. 19. The Magistrate gave judgment at the Court last Wednesday for the amount claimed for commission by Messrs Lund and Sampson from Chas, Goldsmith, £l4, with costs. The Freezing Works resumed killing operations last Tuesday, when an exceptionally fine line of sheep and bullocks passed through the butchers' hands. Several members of the North Taranaki Patriotic League journeyed to Lepperton on Thursday evening to meet the settlers with a view to endeavouring to form a branch of the League at that place. Forty settlers attended the meeting, which was presided over by Mr. F. Atkinson. The chairman spoke briefly on the reason of the gathering, and called on the delegates. Messrs Beckbessinger and Buchanan very fully explained the position, and answered several questions. It was unanimously resolved to form a branch of the League at Lepperton, and the following were appointed a committee for the ensuing year: Messrs Atkinson (chairman). Brown (hon. sec.), Lepper, Roberts, Openshaw, Hellier, and Crowe. The meeting was an earnest one, and no doubt with the committee now appointed Lepperton will do even more in the future than it has done in the past, and that is saying a great deal, for a large amount has been sent to different places from the district. The annual general meeting of the Waitara Surf Bathing and Seaside Improvement Society was held in the Council office last evening, Mr. A W. Ogle presiding. A lengthy report was read, and showed that the membership during the last season had fallen considerably, owing to a large number having gone to the front. The track to the beach has been widened from Oft to 14ft, and with some top dressing during the coming winter should stand a fair amount of traffic without requiring much attention. The heavy floods during last winter did a slight amount of damage to the track, but a few loads of earth repaired it. It was pointed out that there wa? still a great deal to be done in beautifying the beach, and this not only required money but labor, and if those who can help would do so it would mean great improvements to the facilities that already exist there, The opening day was left in the hands ot the committee. Officers were elected as follows: Patron, Hi< Worship the Mayor; president, Mr. A. W. Ogle; vice-presi-dents, Dr. Campbell, Messrs T. R. Ford and R. Bribbon; secretary and treasurer, Mr. A. J. Arms; committee, Messrs .L Alorrison, E. C. Jones. L. H. Sampson. F. Clare. J. Laing, G. IT. Mellor. F. .T. Brabant. C. TTallani, A. Hawkins, J. Olilson; ladies' committee, Mesdamcs Trim, Arms, Brabant, Young, Morrison. Langman. "Roberts, Ilallam. Brassington, Spurdle, Beckbessinger, E. C. Jones, Scott, Misses Bland and Brabant. Mr. Arms was accorded a hearty vote of thanks for the way in which he had carried out his secretarial duties. The Society are losing one of their most active members in the person of Mr. C. F, Turner, who is enlisting for active service.
