CENTRAL SCHOOL CARNIVAL.
ARRANGF.MENTS PROPOSED. The preliminary committee in connection with the Central School Carnival met in the Council Chambers on Wednesday evening. The following were appointed a general committee:-—Messrs S. J. Smith, Flannagan, Hill (East End), Saunders and Robb (West End), Hughes and Hayden (Moturoa), S. G. Smith, Milne, Short, Griffiths and Coleman (School Committee), Dempsey, Mellroy and Day (school staff), and Messrs Deare, Carter, Moon, Elliot, Sadler, Brooks, Captain Allen and Major Sandford. Mr. S. G. Smith was elected chairman of the committee and Mr. Dempsey secretary. The following resolutions were carried : (1) That the committee accept with grateful thanks the offer of the Mayoress to organise the arrangements for providing afternoon tea. (2) That Mr. S. G. Smith endeavor to organise a procession on the same lines as formerly. (3) That the tug-of-war be again put under the supervision of Mr. Flannagan, who was given a free hand to make his own arrangements. It is his intention to have the pull on a raised platform, so as to be easily seen bv the spectators. (4) That Mr. J. R. Hill be responsible for the organising of a short cricket match (not more than half an hour) between two teams of veteran cricketers —town versus country, (5) That all sports clubs in or near New Plymouth be asked to eo-operate in making the carnival a success. (6) That application be made for the services of the Citizens' Band, and failing that to secure a band from somewhere. (7) That the Education Board be written to asking them to close the schools of the district on that day. (8) That the secretary make application for late trains anil reduced fares. (0) That the canvassing for advertisements for the programme be again taken over by Mr. Moon. (10) That "Captain Allen, Mr. Elliot, and the secretary draw up the programme. (11) That Mr. Felix Bellringer be asked to act as marshal of the procession. (12) That the secretary communicate with Waihi School asking that their famous poi dance team be sent in to give an exhibition at the carnival (13) That Messrs Sykes. J. R. Hill, Bennock, Hoffmann and Flannagan be a auh-cominittee to arrange side-shows and report at next meeting. (14) That no money prizes be offered, but that certificates of merit will be given for best exhibits. As the proceeds are for patriotic purposes it was thought that this arrangement would be more satisfactory to those interested. (15) That Mr. A. M. Bradbury be asked to judge the exhibits. (16) That application be made to the Band Committee for the Joan of the grotesque heads and that Mr. Crooks take charge 4f the arrangements for their appearing in the procession.
