DISTRICT COMPARISONS. ■SOUTH ISLAND'S SHOWING A STILL FURTHER FALL. The weekly return issued by the D*> fence Department on Wednesday, giving the recruiting percentages in the four military districts throughout the Dominion, shows that the South Island during the past week lias still further fallen 'behind in the rate of enlistment, while the Wellington Military District, contributing almost Half, has dropped .08 per cent., and the Auckland Military Distric has advanced .38 per cent. In the separate return giving the percentages of recruits passed as physically fit and remaining to be examined, the Wellington district has improved its position still further, supplying more than half the total Mounted Rifles and Infantry, and nearly half the total Artillery, these three branches being the most important as requiring by far the greatest number of men. Wellington also has big quotas available for the other arms of the service, with two exceptions (Maoris and Hospital Ship), and in every case shows an increased percentage upon the 'figures for the previous week, excepting Army Service Corps and Maoris, for which there are reductions. Auckland has gone down in Mounted Rifles, Engineers, Signal Service, Veterinary Corps, Hospital Ship, and Tunnelling Company, while she ha» gone up in Infantry, Artillery, Army Service Corps, Ambulance, and Maoris. Canterbury has dropped in all arms with the exception of Artillery, Army Service Corps, Veterinary Corps, Hospital Ship, and Tunnelling Company, in which she has gone up.
