RESPONSIBILIT!
To the Editor/ Sir, —The doctrinal statements, or mis-statements, made by a clergyman from his pulpit may well' be left to the intelligence of his hearers to accept or reject, but when the preacher publishes his sermon in a daily paper of wide circulation he assumes a responsibility which he may not shirk without dishonor. Public opinion in this country will not tolerate a speaker who is not able and willing to substantiate his public statements, more especially when these reflect upon venerable institutions. One who is not willing to follow the correct course should confine oneself to harmless platitudes.—l am, etc.. J. P. POWER. Hawera, November 13. [The responsibility is ours more than the clergyman's, the sermons being published, not at the instance of 1 the clergyman in question, but by request of country readers who have no other opportunity of hearing the sermons.—Ed.]
