POWERS OF THE COMMONWEALTH. By Cable.—Press Association—Copyright Sydney, Nov. 12. In the Assembly, the Commonwealth Powers Bill, referring to the powers of the Commonwealth which the latter were seeking in the referendum, passed the first reading. Mr. Hall emphatically denied Mr. Wade's suggestion that the State's deference to the powers of the Commonwealth was connected with the Commonwealth's ten million loan to the States. THE SUPPLY BILL. Melbourne, Nov. 12. In the House a Supply Bill for £10,245,008, providing for neees3ities*to May passed all stages. The Bill withdrawing the referendum writs passed all stages. DESTRUCTIVE BUSH FIRES. Sydney, Nov. 12. Bush fires are sweeping the Blue Mountains. Trains are compelled to travel through dense smoke and flames. The fires are causing serious losses in New England and other districts. PRICE OF FLOUR. Melbourne, Nov. 12. The price of flour is being reduced: from £l7 to £ls from Monday. REDUCTION IN DRINKING. Melbourne, Nov. 12. Since the early closing of hotels publicans state that the bar takings have decreased by one quarter and the amount of drinking has largely decreased.
