COUNTRY BELLE'S CUP. Christchurch, Nov. 9. Tlie Metropolitan and Trotting Club's Meeting opened in fine weather. Rain the previous day made the track heavy. All fifteen acceptors for the Cup started. J. Bryce's bracket, Admiral Wood and Mandarine, was favorite, with Our Thorpe nearly as well backed. Frandocia spoilt his chance by refusing to leave the mark. Adonis and Mandarine spoilt their chances by colliding. Don Caesar and Eccentric acted as pacemakers. They got a good break on the field, which was headed by Country Belle. Admiral Wood passed several others in the first mile, but lost his place at half-way, and never looked like winning. With a lap to go, Don Caesar and Eccentric were still in front, with Tommy C and Country Belle next. Eccentric ran himself out half a mile from home, where Don Caesar was followed by Country Belle and Our Thorpe. Country Belle then ran to th,e front, and, coming away, won comfortably by three lengths. Jingle put in n strong finish, and was only beaten by half a length. Admiral Wood finished in fifth place, just behind Don Caesar. The time put up was good, considering the going. The winner was driven by A. F,endricksen, who won the race behind Albert H. The field included seven horses that competed last year, also five winners at the meeting last November. There was a heavy downpour after the race, and for the rest of the afternoon the track conditions were about as bad as they could be. In consequence some big divi'dends were paid. Two North Island horses were successful. Hula, from Auckland, scored in the Spring Handicap and the Hawke's Bay-owned Rawene got home iri the St. Albans Handicap.
