MINISTER FOR EDUCATION.
VISIT TO NEW PLYMOUTH. TO-DAY AT THE SCHOOLS. » SUCCESS OF THE LOAN. The Minister for Education (the Hon. J. A. Hanan) arrived at New Plymouth by the mail train last night. lie was accompanied by his private secretary (.Mr. F. M. Sherwood). Oil arrival at the station the Minister was met by the Hon. (). Samuel, M.L.C., Mr. H. Okey, M.P., and Mr. 11. Trimble (chairman of the Taranaki Education Board). After dinner, it number of deputations waited on the Minister at the White lla.i t Hotel. Mr. 11. .1. Okey, M.l'., who introduced the deputations, welcomed Mr. llanan on his iirst Ministerial visit to the district, and also took the opportunity of congratulating the National Cabinet on the outcome of the flotation of the loan, which had just been raised. While there were many who thought it would be subscribed, there were not any sanguine enough to think that it would have been so much over-subscribed.
Mr. llanan said that he was pleased to visit tho district, so n« to obtain a knowledge of its educational requirements and work. To-day, he hoped to see what had been done in various parts of the district, The lo«n flotation was indeed a matter for congratulation, as it sh-owed what a wonderful country New Zealand was, and what resources it had, and he hoped it would still further show that it was self-reliant and self-contained.
This morning at nine o'clock the Minister will visit the Boys High School, and he will afterwards proceed to the Girls' High School and to the sites of the proposed new buildings. About 10.30 o'clock the Minister will arrive at the Technical College. After inspecting the college the party will visit the Fitzroy, West End, and Vogeltown Schools, and it is probable a visit will also be paid to the Central School. The Minister has accepted an invitation to be present at the railway concert at tho Theatre Royal to-night, and to-morrow lie will leave for Stratford by the 12.50 p.m. train. At Stratford Mr. Hanan will meet several deputations anil inquire into a number of educational matters. He will leave Stratford for the Bonth by Ismail train on Friday morning.
