DISTRICT NEWS.

(From Our Own Correspondents.) KAPOXGA. Notwithstanding tlio rough elements, quite u large crowd gathered at the Post Olliee to welcome Private F. Burgess home. Tlie proceedings were enlivened by the Band. Mr. C. J£. Betts (chairman of the Town Board) expressed his pleasure at seeing Private Burgess home again, and mentioned that having been severely wounded showed that lie must have been well in the thick of it. Mr. Betts again made a verv strong appeal to those who had not as yet answered the call. Father Caliill spoke in a very forceful way, showing that if we were to emerge victorious from this great struggle we would have to soundly organise, and every man would have to do his share. Rev. Mr. Kirgan considered that every man who had spontaneously come forward and had "done his bit," as Private Burgess had done, was a hero, and deserving of the Victoria Cross. The speaker also dwelt very strongly on the duty of every man who was* able to go forward and help to crush the mosr powerful enemy and not wait until lie was compelled to serve. Mr. Betts called for three cheers for the returned soldier, which were lustily given, also cheers for the King. The playing of the National Anthem lay the Band brought the proceedings to a close.
