CENTRAL SCHOOL.

■MEETING OF THE COMMITTEE. The monthly meeting of the Central School Committee was held in the Town Hall last night. Present: Messrs S. G. Smith (chairman), the Rev. A, B. Chappell, G. H. Dolby, A. Milne, T. Hardgrave, V. Griffiths, F. Coleman, and C. T. Mills (secretary). Mr. Dempsey (headmaster) reported: The attendances for the past four weeks respectively were 508, 492, 513, and 503; average attendance 504; on the roll, 564. A good deal of sickness was prevalent, especially among the lower standards. Two of the staff, Misses A. Gleeson and K. Anthony, were absent through illness, and in consequence the work of the school was interfered with. Owing to the numerous enlistments with the Expeditionary Forces among teachers, the ranks of teachers were considerably depleted, and great difficulty is being experienced in getting Huit&ble substitutes. Mr. N. Day had taken up his duties at the school and was already doing satisfacovy work. In connection with Vogeltown School it was not proposed to make any alteration, at least for the present, unless the school hecame overcrowded. It had been suggested that a carnival, on similar lines to those previously held, should be organised, and already three Foreshore Committees had signified their willingness to assist. The children of the upper standards, 3, 4, 5, and 6, decided by a majority of 230 to 4 in favor of funds going to patriotic purposes instead. of prizes.

Mr. C. T. Mills was recommended to fill the vacancy on the committee caused by the Rev. Roseveare's resignation. Messrs W. P. Short and V. Griffiths were appointed to watch the interests of the Vogeltown side school.
